Thursday, Sept. 27th

Tomorrow is board game day!! If your child has NEVER been on red, has been on yellow less than 4 times, or has always been on GREEN, then they are invited to participate in board game day!! I have sent a flier home tonight with each child who "made it." Please allow your child to bring a board game (or card game) to play during our reward time :) Make sure to congratulate your child on their amazing behavior as well!!!

Wednesday, Sept. 26

Today in class we made a fun project to help us remember the 4 life cycle stages of a butterfly.

In math we played a game to review Greater Than and Less Than, and another game to review Place Value.  The other day we played a money game to help us practice our money counting skills-- take a look at the pictures below :)

In reading we are finishing our "Real Readers" series.  So far we have learned that real readers: Remember what they read, sound out unknown words, use context clues, and read the WHOLE book from beginning to end.  We are also working on building up our reading stamina so that our minds can focus on reading for at least 30-40 minutes without breaks. This helps children become more enganged in their book at ensures that they are "reading for meaning" and not just looking at the pictures or skipping around to different words.

**No reminders today :) Just please be sure that you are doing that homework!! (3 spelling activities, reading log & math!)

Tuesday, Sept. 25th

Today in class we got to spend time with our new insect 'pets'--- caterpillars! The have hatched from their eggs and are now "larva."  Soon, they will get into their cocoons and will be called "pupa."  The kids can't WAIT for that to happen!

In reading we practiced the strategy of skipping the word and then coming back to it to find its meaning.  This is called using "context clues."  We called it "skip and go back."  Try having your child use this strategy at home rather than telling them the words they are stuck on :)

BOOK EXCHANGE IS TOMORROW!! Send a used book from home if you would like your child to be able to exchange it for a "new" used book to read at home!

Monday, Sept. 24th

Today in class we learned new science vocabulary to describe the 4 life cycle stages of insects (Egg, Larva, Pupa, Adult) we also noticed that our mealworms are turning black!!
In reading we practiced finding unknown words in our 'just right books' and then "chunking" them in order to sound them out easier (example: If the word is thanksgiving you would stark by noticing the TH blend, then maybe the ING, you may know the ANK sound, ect. then put them all together to find the actual word)
In writing we started a new project- the ABC insect vocabulary book :) Ask you child about it tonight.

We have book exchange on Wednesday this week.  You may bring an old book from home that you are no longer interested in and swap it for another used book! Bring a book on Wednesday to participate :)

Friday, Sept 21

THANK YOU to all those parents who made sure homework was completed for today!! The kids who earned a 100% got an extra treat tthis afternoon and LOTS of praise!! It is so important for them the have gained this sense of resposibility now :)

New homework went home today as well as many important fliers.  Please take time to look them over.

Today in class we took our math test! It is now in the orange folder, take a look to see how your child did :) We also took our spelling test.  It was a LONG morning for the kids (lots of quiet time during the test) but they did a GREAT job with their behavior :)

In the afternoon we reviewed a book we read yesterday about Henry Ford.  We made a lot of connections to the story because we all recognized the name "Ford" and the city the story took place in-- Detroit!  Afterwards we read a story about "monster school" and made connections to some of the behaviors that the monsters were having.  We reviewed our classroom rules and talked more about good behavior.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Thursday, Sept. 20th

Today in class we sang the insect version of "head, shoulders, knees, and toes" that we made up! Ask your child to perform it for you :)  I recorded them singing it and will try to upload it on the blog tonight form home (I've never uploaded audio before so we'll see if I can figure it out!)

We reviewed for our math test today with 2 games and review questions on the smartboard.  I am SO VERY impressed by how much better the kids have gotten at counting money in just these past few weeks! I can't wait to see how they do on the test tomorrow.

**For those of you that signed up to volunteer (at back to school night), I am sending home a volunteer schedule tomorrow in the orange folder.  Please look at it and let me know if you can no longer volunteer! If you on on the schedule, I will count on you coming unless you let me know otherwise! I wanted to give you plenty of notice, so we will start the schedule the week of Oct. 1st (not next week but the following week)

**Homework due tomorrow!! I sent home a reminder note tonight to help everyone be SURE that their child has everything they need to get full credit-- look for it in your child's backpack tonight!

Wednesday, Sept. 19th

Today in class we started to review for our math test!  We went over greater and less than (which the kids are AWESOME at), practiced more coin counting, did some simple 'mental math' addition facts, and practiced with time (which they are also GREAT with). We will continue our review tomorrow with our first test on Friday!!

In writing we learned how to use our 'Quick Word'--which is like a mini-dictionary and talked about what to do if we can't find the word we need to spell.  So far our strategies include: looking for the word around the room (on posters, on the word wall, in the word bank on the board, ect) and asking the teacher to add it to the Quick Word.  All students have a bunch of standards words in their Quick Word but also a LOT of space for me to add individual words based on their needs.  I am REALLY stressing the need for correct spelling and handwriting right now! I like to form good habits early on in the year :)

No important reminders today :) Just remember to do that homework for Friday! (3 spelling activities, the reading log, and the math)

Have a good night

Tues, Sept. 18th

Today in class we practiced writing sentences.  Students are required to use correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling during the writing time.  This is a bit of an adjustment from 1st grade--many students have been accustom to "sounding it out" only.  You can help your child make this transition easier by encouraging good spelling and punctuation at home.

In science today we observed our meal worms.  We noticed that they started shedding their skin in preparation for a big "change."  Maybe tomorrow or the next day we will start to find out what the "change" is going to be!

Today in reading we met with our reading groups.  We spent today as a "getting to know you" time.  We talked about the books we enjoyed and found out that the people in our reading groups actually have a lot in common with each other :)

In math we practiced adding amounts of money and then using the < and > sign.  We had 2 groups of coins that we had to add up and then decided which group was largest.  We will continue to practice money throughout the next few units.  The Unit 1 test is coming up THIS Friday!! Amazing how fast time flies! We will be reviewing for the test in class on Thursday :)

Monday, Sept. 17th

Happy Constitution Day! Today in class we will be talking about the constitution, what it is, and why we need one! The kids will also be writing their own little version of what they think would be in a good classroom constitution :) I added the link to the "School House Rock" constitution song under the "You Tube" tab on this page.

I scheduled a fun field trip for the class! We will be going to see Alice in Wonderland Jr. at Parcells Middle School! This will by Nov. 7th at 1pm.  I will not be sending home permission slips until the middle/end of next month, but I wanted to give you a heads up in case you would like to volunteer to drive. Email me if you think you can make it!

Ask your child tonight what the Constitution is :) We defined it as a "set of rules or laws that we all follow in order to make America a better place"

Have a great night!

Friday, Sept. 14

YIKES!!! There were a LOT of people who did not complete/do the homework!!!!!!!! Please read the directions on the spelling page (it says to do THREE of the nine spelling activities) and complete the reading log! I wrote personal notes to each of you letting you know what you did not do so that you can complete the homwork apropriately next week.  There were a LOT of kids who did not get popscicles and who did not get recess today.  Please don't let your child be one of those kids next week!
To those of you who got 100%-- great job!! and thank you for reading the directions :)

Today in class we got our mealworms!! Mealworms are little worms that eventually turn into something else (I'm not telling the kids what type of insect hey willl turn into yet!). We observered the meal worms and recorded our findings :)

In math we worked again on counting by a certain number (counting by 7's, counting by 6's, ect) and also practiced again with sums (find 3 addition facts that add up to 30, ect)

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! Make sure to check your child's backback for their graded spelling test, graded homework, and NEW HOMEWORK for next week! :)

**I added the october calendar to the "calendar tab" check it out if you'd like to know whats happening around Poupard

Thursday, Sept. 13th

Today in class we reviewed the parts of an insect and each made a diagram.  We also put together a little book with insect facts that we got to read with partners at reading time.
In math we made number lines with patterns (Example: counting by 4's starting at 24, ect). We also did a lot of work with place value.  You can practice this at home too by asking your child which number is in the tens place, the hundreds place, thousands place, ones place, ect.  We will go up to the millions place by the end of this unit.

HOMEWORK IS DUE TOMORROW!! Remember that your child must do 3 activities on the grid and there must be some form of evidence attached so that I know what they worked on this week :)

Here are a couple pictures I received yesterday of Yasmin's spelling work!

**We will be starting our traditional "Reading Groups" with our reading teachers on Monday.  I am so excited to get this going!

A look around our room :)

Wed. Sept. 12th

Thank you to those that came to Back To School Night last night!! If you couldn't make it, please come see me after school or before school so that I can get your information and allow you to sign up for conferences!

Today in class we learned more about the body parts of insects and did that "insect hokey pokey" (put your thorax in, put your thorax out, put your thorax in and you shake it all about!)
In math we would on adding to find a common sum (ex. find 3 ways to make 12: 6+6, 3+0, 10+2). In reading we make a chart about why we love to read and wrote about our favorite place to read. Finally , in writing we reviews periods, question marks and exclamation points and then wrote a fiction story titled "The Dog who loved to Read."

Look at the "Daily Report" in your child's backpack to see what color he/she was on today :)

Tuesday, Sept. 11th

Tonight is Back to School Night!! Please come at 6:30.  I promise, even if you have had students at Poupard in the past, you will still learn useful information about our classroom and the year to come! This is an important night!

Today in class we practiced IDR time (Silent Reading) and took pictures of ourselves being "perfect IDRers."  We also used a number grid in math to did "ten more" and "ten less" questions.  During Science we learned about the parts of an insect (head, thorax, and abdomen). Finally, we had an assembly to honor American Heros (since today is 9-11).

See you all tonight!!

Monday, Sept. 10th

Tomorrow is BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT!!! It begins at 6:30 in the gym.  After a brief introduction by Ms. Stocks, we will move into the classrooms. This is a very important event and I hope to see all of you there :)

Today in class we did our Everyday math boxes (review pages of the work we did last week). We also got to fill our book boxes with our "on level" books.
Each child was given their Letter Today (A-U) and  got to choose books at their letter to put in their book boxes.  In class we ONLY read books at our level.  Research shows that students who read on level make faster, more solid growth. Since we have just begun the testing process, I may be changing some student's letters depending on the type of reading I see them doing in class.

We also got a new student today! We now have 22 students :) The students were very welcoming to him and were very willing to help him adjust to his new school.

I hope that you all got a chance to see your child's "daily report" today.  Each student wrote a quick note about what we did, what was their favorite thing about the day, their behavior color, and important reminders. We will be doing this everyday as a way to keep you informed and keep you updated about your child's behavior and upcoming events.

Thank you to those that sent picture, stickers, and supplies for your child' writing journal! We decorated them today and the kids LOVED doing it :)

HOMEWORK WAS SENT HOME TODAY!! I gave each child their homework folder with complete instructions.  You will notice that the front cover of the folder says that it is due on FRIDAY.  There is spelling, math, and a reading log inside.  PLEASE READ THE DIRECTIONS carefully so you know what to do.  I will be going over everything on Tuesday for Back-to-School night but wanted to get you familiar with the homework folder and work beforehand.

Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!!!Looking forward to a full week next week :)

Thursday, Sept. 6th

BIG NEWS!! Because our class size has grown to 26, the decision has been made to move some students into another classroom starting MONDAY.  4 of my students will be moved into Ms. Ranieri's classroom as part of a multi-age, grade 1-2 split.  A note went home today explaining how the decision was made and WHO YOUR CHILD'S NEW TEACHER WILL BE.  Almost all students will remain in my classroom.  The 4 students who were chosen to move classrooms were selected by Ms. Stocks in an effort to build a successful learning community in the new classroom. I truly hate to see any of my students go, however, I know that having a smaller class size will benefit all students.  Mrs. Ranieri is a wonderful teacher and I know that any students moving to her room will love her :) Please check your child's backpack for the note tonight.  I will be talking with the entire class about this change tomorrow.

In other (not as big) news, today in class we started Writer's Workshop! We also read a book about friendship and diversity.  In math we practiced with clocks. Again, many students had this concept down but a few did not remember to count by 5's when reading the minute hand.  If you don't have an analog clock at home, it would be WONDERFUL if you could get one so that your child can practice telling time throughout the day.

Hope you all have a great night!! If you need to talk to me about the class switching, I will come outside a little early tomorrow to chat and hear your questions and concerns (or you can come inside to see me if I am not out there yet).  Ms. Stocks will also be available today after school if you need to call or talk with her.

Wednesday, Sept. 5

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT HAS BEEN CHANGED to Sept. 11th at 6:30pm

Please return all forms and my "Parent Questionaire" ASAP if you have not!
Summer bridge books are due by next Monday!! Please get those completed and send them to me :)

**Parents: if you wish to donate to the classroom, we could REALLY use more pencil boxes. If you see some for a good price, grab about 5 for me and I'll pay you back!

Today in class we read a book about Autism and learned how to treat those who may be different from us.  We also wrote "2nd grade resolutions."  In math, we counted money.  A LOT of students were AWESOME at this!! A few kids seemed to be just learning this skill.  Try having your child count a handful of change at home and see how he/she does!

Tuesday, Sept 4th

Happy first day of school!!
I gave everyone a copy of our specials schedule and our daily schedule today.  For those who were not able to attend Meet The Teacher day, I send home a classroom handbook and parent questionaire for you to read. Please take the time to go through those items.

Today in class we sorted through our supplies (if you haven't got your supplies yet, please send at least the Pencil Box ASAP), had an assembly, painted a self portrait, made a poster about how to "stay ofn Green", and played a game in the gym! The day went by super fast! I took a few pictures today that I would love to post on the website for you to see but I need to wait on a few web-permission slips from parents. I will start posting pictures as soon as I can :)

**Please send your completed Summer Bridge book to school this week!! These are due by Monday.

**Today was A day!! Which means tomorrow will be B day. Check your new specials schedule to see what our specials will be tomorrow :)
