Update!

We have 12 drivers for greenfield village! This means that all of cars will only be carrying 1 or 2 students.  When we get to the park, I put together groups with 2 parents and 2-3 kids to travel around the village together.  I would like each parent to bring a camera that so that you can take pictures of the students at various locations around the village.  It is important that students spend time at each exhibit reading the plaques, listening to the presenters, and learning about the historical value of the village.  There will be plenty of time for the students to have fun and enjoy themselves, but we also want to make sure they are learning from their surroundings throughout the day as well.   As a chaperone, part of your responsibility will be to encourage students to take an interest in the exhibits.  When we arrive at the village I will give each child and parent their admission ticket and then will give each parent the train ride tickets for their group (it's best that parents hold onto these until you are ready to use them).  You will be free to take your students around the village at your own speed.  We will all meet for lunch mid-day and then again around 2:45pm for final check-in before we go home for the day.

In other news, our school field day is tomorrow; however, the forecast is looking like we will be most likely cancelling the day and moving our field day to next Friday (June 8).

The all school kickball game is Monday June 4th.  It may be HOT and we encourage all students to wear sunscreen that day! We will be outside for an extended period.  Water will be provided.

NO MORE LATE STARTS! We don't have late start on Mondays anymore.  Please arrive at school at 8:20 everyday.

Monday June 11th is "Step Up Day" for the students.  This is a day when the kids get to go meet the teachers for next year.  Students are not assigned a specific teacher yet, so they will be meeting all the 3rd grade teachers in one room.  The teachers will be giving students a talk about expectations for 3rd grade.

2nd Grade awards will be taking place on June 13th at 8:45 am.  Students will have their name called to receive either a citizenship award (for students who have been on "green" most of the year), a perfect attendance award (for those who have never missed school or been late), or a students council award. Parent are welcome to attend.

The 2nd grade picnic will be June 12th from 12pm-3:30pm.  We are in need of parents to come and help serve pizza, run games, and fill water balloons.  I also need a parent to pick up the pizza at Jett's around 11:30am-- if you are willing to do this for me, please let me know.  I have money left over from our Flat Stanley postage so I will be using that to purchase the pizza for my students! If your student did not contribute to this fund, you will receive a separate note requesting $2.  Some other lunch items that we will need are: cold water Bottles in coolers, Popsicles, potato chips, and cookies (or anything else you think that kids would enjoy!) Please let me know if you are willing to donate.  Since we are doing the picnic as a whole grade, all classes will be requesting these items from parents in class-size increments (ours is 19) and then setting everything up together for the picnic.  Please send you child with a beach towel, sunscreen and a hat that day!

June 13 and June 14 are half days.  PLEASE SEND YOU CHILD TO SCHOOL WITH A BACKPACK EVERYDAY.  I know half days are short, but they still need a backpack because I will be sending home LOTS of items.

Monday, May 21

I hope all of you saw the lovely invites that your child made inviting you to our play this week! It is this Wednesday at 2:30 in the gym.  Mrs. Ranieri's class will also be performing a play at 2:15 so if you would like to come a bit early, you could enjoy both shows :)
The play will be approx. 15-20 minutes and is truly a program put on by the kids (don't expect any fancy staging!) but they are SO VERY EXCITED for this! They have been working so hard and many students have even been choosing to practice their parts during recess! I understand that this is a difficult time for many parents to come into the school so I will be video taping the performance and will gladly burn you a copy of it if you provide a blank DVD :)  I would like to try to put it on YouTube (on a password protected channel) but I would need to get all the parents approval slips for that and I am not sure if I can get them all at this point in the year-- we'll see!

If your child is a doctor or anything else the requires props, please try to send them to school tomorrow so that I will know who has an outfit/props and who will need to make quickly something before the show!

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Tuesday, May 15th

Long time no post! Sorry I haven't updated in a while, we have been working on a few big projects these past few weeks and the we are in the process of wrapping up!

In writing we have been busy researching and writing animal reports.  These will be coming home soon!

In reading, the class had been working with non-fiction texts and identifying non-fiction text features (such as table of contents, diagrams, captions, index, bold words, ect.)

In my reading group we have been reading the book "Freckle Juice" and having books talks.  The kids have been WONDERFUL about thinking of questions to discuss and working in a 'book club.'  They sounds like little adults! They really are ready for 3rd grade!

In math we have began to work on multiplication. The kids have started to write multiplication sentences (8 x 4= 32) to go along with their arrays or drawings.  We will start using flashcards and working on more multiplication through the end of the year.  Multiplication flash cards over the summer would be great addition to your summer learning!

You may have heard that we have been working on our class play a LOT this week and last.  The students will be making invitation to invite their parents & schoolmates to the play this afternoon.  The play will be at 2:45 on May 23rd in the gym.  SOME STUDENTS NEED TO WEAR A SPECIAL OUTFIT FOR THE PLAY!! ASK YOUR CHILD WHAT THEIR PART IS AND WHAT TYPE OF OUTFIT THEY NEED TO WEAR! If you have any extra doctor or nurse play items that you would be willing to donate, please send them to school! We promise to return them after the play in perfect condition. Thank you!

Our field trip is THIS THURSDAY to the Provencal-Weir House. We will be leaving the school at 8:40 AM and returning around 12:15. AL STUDENTS MUST bring a lunch to school that day! Please pack your lunch in a disposable bag (we won't have a place on the trip to store lunch boxes or tupperware to take back to school)

It's time to sign up for summer school! The below description is for GP schools summer school for kids at all levels (there are beginner, grade level, and challenge courses!). So if your child would enjoy learning something new this summer or being challenged with some higher level materials, think about signing up.
We will also be having Poupard summer school just for our kids who may need extra help.

As the summer season rapidly approaches, please take the opportunity to investigate the summer learning opportunities that are offered through Grosse Pointe Public Schools. Courses will run Monday – Thursday, from July 16th to August 2nd.

This year’s program offers a broad array of courses ranging from skill building to extracurricular activities.  Highlights of the program include F.A.S.T. Reading, Literature Circles, Building Blocks in Math, Foreign Language, Art Exploration, and advanced math courses for incoming 5th and 6rg grade students.  The district also offers new 6th graders courses to help them transition to middle school.

Each of these courses will help students solidify skills before returning to school in the fall.  Enrollment has begun and will continue through the end of June.  Further information and enrollment forms are currently in the quick links section of the district web-site.  Please consider taking advantage of all this program has to offer

Tuesday, May 1st

Today in class we did a science experiment for our new motion unit.  Ask your child what they learned!

We also read the script for our class play today! We will be performing the play on May 23rd at 2:30pm!!!!! We are chosing parts and starting to practice this week :)  There are several parts that will require the children to bring/make props so please talk to your child about what you are & are not willing to do (they know that some parts require a lot of help for props and some do not) before they make this final character selection.  When it gets closer, I will need help during the school day making the backdrop and helping students make their props.  If this is something you might be able to help with, please let me know!

Tomorrow is the book exchange! Bring your old book exchange book or a different one from home that you would like to trade in.
THIS FRIDAY IS THE TIN CAN AUCTION at 6pm.  Please come if you are able :) This is a big fund raiser for our PTO. The money our PTO raises buys everything from books to field trips to playground equiptment for our kids!
