Handbook

Mrs. Stewart’s 2nd Grade Handbook

Blog: If you're here, you've found the blog! This is one of my BIGGEST forms of communication with you during the school year.  I know papers and notes sometimes get lost in the bottom of the backpack so I created this blog to help make sure messages get to you! You can also sign up for email updates on my site so that every time I write on the webpage you will get an email with the exact text from that day--how cool is that? Now you will know what your child is learning about everyday in school! Please make sure to bookmark this page and visit it often! MrsStewart.Blogspot.com

Friday Binder/Homework: In second grade we are practicing good behavior and responsibility. Your child will be bringing home 2-3 pieces of math homework and a spelling packet each week in a white binder. The binder will be sent home every Friday and will be due back the following Friday. I will also try to save up any forms and papers given to me by the office to send home in the binder on Fridays as well (so you can get everything all at once and not have to dig through the backpack every day :) ) The homework binder will also include a weekly reading log that you will turn in at the end of each week.

Spelling: All students will have leveled spelling lists this year. I will test your child to determine which level of spelling he/she is currently working at. Spelling activities will be given to your students in the homework binder each week. Spelling tests will be on Fridays. If you would like to help out in the classroom,  I am always looking for parents to come in and give spelling test to small groups of kids in the hallway.  Let me know if you are interested!

Healthy Snack: Students are welcome to bring a healthy snack to school each morning. Snack will be eaten around 10:15 each day. Please remember that we will be eating snack while working on other things so please pack small, easy to eat items. Please do not send drinks (other than a water bottle) candy, desserts, or junk food (this includes chips!) Think crackers, cheese-its, grapes, fruit snacks, ect.  We don't get our tables washed everyday with the 'good stuff' (we clean them each afternoon but the custodian only does it every so often) so please try to keep the messy stuff for a minimum (yogurt that your child cant open themselves, fruit cups with syrup that spills, ect.)

Classroom Management: We will be using the school-wide management system here at Poupard. Each student will begin the day on Great behavior (Level Green). Students will be asked to “pull a ticket” or “flip a ticket” if they break a school or classroom rule. Students who break more than one rule or who repeatedly misbehave will be asked to pull a additional tickets. If your child has pulled a ticket during the day, I will send a note home informing you about the incident. Students who stay on GREEN (with less than 16 points lost month for the first marking period) will be rewarded with a special activity/event at the end of each month. Some planned rewards are: Game day, Fall Festival, Dance party, beach day, scavenger hunt, moon walk, and extra gym time.

Birthday Treats: Your child is welcome to share a treat with the class on his/her birthday. Generally, we will celebrate birthdays during the late part of the afternoon; contact me to arrange a specific time if you are planning to attend the celebration. Otherwise, you may send the treat in the morning and I will serve it in the afternoon. Please make sure to send plates, napkins, etc. if they are needed. We currently have 28 students in our class.

Volunteers: I LOVE having parent volunteers in our classroom and your students LOVE seeing you at school! On Back-to-School night I will have a sign-up sheet available for parent/adult volunteers. Some options for volunteering in our classroom include: Room parent, Friday Helper, Book Order Organizer, Help-from-Home adult, and guest speaker! Please let me know if you are interested and be sure to sign up on Back-to-School night :)
