Last day!!!

Happy last day!!!! We had a great day! I cannot believe it's over!
After having my daughter this year, I am constantly reminded just how precious every moment is that you can spend with you child. In your case, your precious little 2nd grader is moving up to 3rd grade and becoming a "big kid" within our school; I hope that you are able to soak up every moment with your "little kid" this summer before you all move up into the 3rd grade world of daily planners, lockers, and book reports!!

As I prepare to take a 2 year leave of absence from teaching, I am reminded of all the students and parents who I have met in my career. I have truly loved each and every student I have ever taught. I have received so much love and joy from my students over the years and will look back at my time at Poupard with very find memories. I consider all my students and their families as a part if my extended family. Thank you so much for your warmth, kindness, and for sharing your little babies with me!

If you ever need to contact me you can do so on my personal email account (as my school email will be shut down) which is: KatharineEStewart@gmail.com
I'd love updates about your student :)

Have a wonderful summer!!

Tomorrow is our picnic! So far we have plates, napkins, juice, chips, and Rice Krispies. If you could send sine fruit (grapes, apples slices, ect) that would be super. We also REALLY need helpers to come set up and monitor the stations!! It's not hard work, I swear :) we just need parents willing to come play with the kids! Come if you can! We're starting at 12:30!

Half days wed and thurs! Report cards and summer bridge books go home Thursday!!

Friday, June 7

Happy Friday!! Today was an awesome day- we had kickball outside, worked on our end of the year math evaluation, did some writing, cleaned out our desks, and just spent a little extra time enjoying each other! I can't believe how mature these kids have gotten!! I can see it in everything they do- from the jokes they make to the way they help around the classroom. They are no longer primary students!! Only 4 days until they are officially in the intermediate grades! Wow

Our picnic is Tuesday. So far we have: juice boxes, chips, cookies, Plates, wipes/napkins, and water bottles. We could use more side dishes to go with our pizza (fruit, crackers, something!!) thanks to those who have signed up to help already!! I need someone to help fill up water balloons!! If you can come around 11 that would be wonderful!

Have a great weekend! Don't forget to look through the backpack. Lots of papers in there. I kept the orange folders to turn in for the end of the year so you'll have to do some digging to find those papers, im sure! :)

Our Trip to Greenfield Village is Tomorrow!!
EVERYONE needs to bring:
·       A packed lunch in a disposable bag
·       Weather appropriate clothing (we will be outside ALL day)
·       $5 for a train ticket OPTIONAL if you’d like to go on the train
**We do NOT need booster seats since we are going on a bus
**We are leaving the school at 9:30. Volunteers need to be at school by 9:15 (even if you are driving yourself please come to school to collect your ticket and list of students you are chaperoning). All students need to be at school at regular time (8:20am)

Friday, may 31

No late start this Monday!!! Come to school at 8:15!

Today I sent home a flier about our class picnic along with a sign up sheet for food a d volunteers (and also a blank page by mistake!! Sorry!) please read it and send it back :)

Sorry to those who cannot ride on the bus for our field trip on Tuesday! With all the kids, we can only fit 10 adults-- that's 3 per class plus 1 teacher. I numbered the forms so I would know who turned theirs in first. If on the day of the trip we have empty seats (because some parents my choose to drive their own child) then we will add more parents onto the bus. It may also be a good idea for some parents to carpool. Getting an additional bus is $275 so we are trying to avoid that!!
All parents need to be at Poupard Tuesday by 9:20 where I will distribute your admission tickets. Children need to be at school at normal time- 8:15.

Have a great weekend :)

Tomorrow is Career Day! Primary students are encouraged to dress up like a career they have learned about or are interested in becoming one day!  Talk to your children about different careers they think they might be good at and help them put together an outfit to wear on Tuesday!  This is not Halloween; make sure the outfit is linked to a real career, not just a 'costume' Thanks!

Tuesday, May 7th

Hi Parents! Thank you so much for all the warm welcomes I have received since being back at school. The kids have been wonderful and have had a great time filling me in about all the things they have learned since I left.

This week in math we are learning about place value.  We will be going up to the MILLIONS! Your student should be able to read, write, and identify numbers up to the millions place. You should be also seeing this in their homework this week.

In reading we are continuing to work on inferences.  Students are encouraged to "read between the lines" to find out what's happening or what is going to happen in their books.

In writing we have started researching different animals for animal reports! Each child has their own book at their reading level to use for research.  A few students have asked if they can also research at home on the Internet-- of course! The more facts they can collect, the better their report will be :) Once we've collected all our facts, we will begin drafting our reports.

In social studies we are continuing to learn about Maps.  The video attached is the students singing the Continentt songs :)We will be finishing this unit up very soon and moving onto learning about history.

FIELD TRIP TOMORROW-- SEND BOOSTER SEAT if your child is 7 years old!
We will be eating lunch at school so no need to worry about a sack lunch.

Homework Due Friday.
Greenfield Village Permission Slip due next Friday but I am accepting them at any time so please go ahead and send them in! Thanks!

Thursday April 25, 2013

We have had an amazing week! Last Monday we started a book-buddy program with Mrs. Breckenridge's Kindergarten class. During our book-buddy time, students read to one another and 2nd graders focus on a skill. This week we focused on stopping at punctuation.

Math workshop is going well and students are improving each day. This week on IXL math students are working on money and time. Please allow them to log in at home, they know how to do this.

In reading we have been focusing on the strategy of inferring. Inferring is like predicting, but using information that the author has stated to help infer.

Social Studies we are focusing on Geography. Students have learned a continent song, are able to identify, and name the 7 continents. They are working on understanding what country, state, county, and city we live in.

Tuesday April 9, 2013

Today we met Emma-Kate and saw Mrs. Stewart!!!!

Students continued working on area, telling time, weighing objects, balancing, addition and subtraction facts during math workshop. We will review chapter 9 this week and their test will be on Friday.

In reading we began to explore inference. To make an inference students act like a detective and look for clues. For Example: If a child is crying you may infer that they are hungry or miss their parents.

In Science we finished up our Motion unit and made tops. Next, we will be focusing on Animal Reports, Maps, and Geography.

Flat Stanley sure did visit a great deal of places over break. The students loved spending time with him and their flat selves. Here a just a few of Stanley's Adventures

In math students have been learning about capacity, area, and perimeter. They made a Gallon Man/Woman and have practiced finding the area and perimeter of given objects. Workshop is going great, students love working together and are getting better listening to one another and working with their classmates.

In reading students have been identifying the Main Idea and details when they read, they have also been focusing on the following reading strategies: going back to reread, looking at pictures to help with comprehension, changing their voice while reading, predicting what will come next, and sounding out unknown words.

Happy Tuesday. Thank you to our wonderful friend Ronoll in 3rd grade for being our Mystery Reader.
Today we continued to practice the skill of measuring in inches, centimeters, and adding two digit numbers. You can help your child memorize their math facts by practicing addition facts with flash cards each night. At conferences I will provide you with some if you are in need. You can also get them at the dollar store.

In reading, we continued to discuss and identify the main idea of a story. To find what the main idea of a story is students have to act like detectives and look for all the details throughout the story.

Book exchange is tomorrow.
